Music

Balboa Magnet has a rich tradition of excellence in vocal and instrumental music making. Students learn the bel canto technique, which literally means "beautiful singing"; it is a technique which, when established, will ensure a lifetime of vocal health. The curriculum, based on Kodaly methodology, is sequential and standards-based. Students learn the basics of music literacy, and develop an understanding of the elements of music as they build a repertoire of folk songs from the United States and around the world. Selections that correlate with classroom curriculum are included to enhance and deepen understanding of what students are learning in their classrooms. In singing and learning together, each student is encouraged to explore and develop his/her potential as a musician and artist.

Students at Balboa Magnet receive instruction in vocal music weekly. Additionally, students in grades four and five have the opportunity to participate in Chorus. These groups meet weekly during lunch to learn additional repertoire, further their understanding of vocal technique, and have fun singing together.
